Gran Canaria

My wife and I went with her folks to Gran Canaria a couple of weeks ago. I must admit, it was very good, with a week on the Canary Islands highly relaxing. I’ve never been so far south in my life, but boy was it worth it. The temperature was solidly around 30 Celsius. For October, this is just staggering, and one my wee Scottish brain finds hard to comprehend. You can certainly tell it is only a 100 miles or so of the coast for Tunisia and Morocco!

We stayed at the Anfi Hotel Resort, which is on the south side of the island, where the majority of the tourism is, and surprised me. I’m sometimes a bit snobby, and a resort holiday makes me a bit dubious. However, the whole complex was a very high quality, with good restaurants, a relaxing beach, about a million different pools, and other facilities too.

In general, it was a chilled out week. We also did some good visits around the island too. This included a boat trip, passing around Porto Rico, to Puerto de Mogán. I had far to much fun there, bartering at markets, setting stupidly low targets for buying various items. I thought I was going to lose my head off one women on the market for going from 25 down to 7 euros on one item. We also went round the island with a very funny Irish chap, who told us all about the island. This included going to the highest point of the island, seeing the outrageously high Mount Teide across the water on Tenerife.

Before going to Gran Canaria I had some probably unfair impressions of the island. Instead, I found a really interesting island, lots to do, and a very relaxing holiday. If only it hadn’t finished so quickly!
