Vienna is one of the great historical cities of Europe. It is a wonderful place to tour, learn about European culture and European monarchies. From the architecture to the museums and operas, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Hapsburg Palace
Your first stop in Vienna should be to the amazing Hapsburg Palace. Conveniently located in the center of town, the Imperial Palace has a number of museums to visit. As an American, the history of much of the Hapsburg dynasty is unfamiliar. Especially so is the story of “Sisi” an Empress comparable to a modern day Diana. There is an entire museum dedicated only to her and the information and collection you find there is fascinating. Buy a combined ticket for this museum and the main palace as both are worth it and both have an audio guide to give you extensive information.
Once you finish with Sisi, you will see the extensive china and silver collection that the Hapsburgs used. It even travelled with them, at times. The audio guide includes explanations of many of the pieces but it is doubtful that one will want to listen to so much information about eating utensils! That is the great thing about audio guides- you can skip whatever doesn’t interest you.
Royal Palace Apartments
Next, head into the royal palace apartments. While there aren’t many surprises here, anyone who enjoys history, royalty, fashion or architecture will want to hear everything the audio guide has to say. Much of the decoration and furniture is typical of European Palaces but still beautiful and an enjoyable way to spend a morning.
If you want to do additional things that the Hapsburg Palace has to offer, you will probably want to come back another day when you are refreshed and haven’t been listening to an audio guide for hours!
Opera House
Once you finish at the Palace, the great location allows for a number of options. First, you will want to get something to eat so plan in advance where you will be eating. Afterwards, you can choose to walk the main pedestrian area of Vienna, head to a museum or visit the great Opera House.
Ride on the Tram
If you are tired from all the history and don’t have the energy for more heavy sightseeing, take a ride on the tram. Tram 1 and 2 go all the way around the Ringstrasse and will give you a feel for the city. Try going at night to see all the buildings lit up and remember, no matter what you decide to do you are sure to have a great time in Vienna.
